Rugby Balls from Kanagawa Rugby Football Union donated to TRU

This is the second patch of donated rugby balls to Tonga, and it is part of a friendly initiative between H.E. Ms. Tania Tupou, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Tonga to Japan, and the Kanagawa Rugby Football Union of Japan. The first patch of donated rugby balls was handed over to Hon. Samuela 'Akilisi Pohiva, Prime Minister of Tonga and the President of the Tonga Rugby Union, during his attendance at the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting or PALM 7 in 2015.

This donation consists of more than 250 rugby balls, which was handed over to Hon. Samuela 'Akilisi Pohiva on the 10th of August 2017 during the visit to Nuku'alofa of a Parliament Member of the House of Representatives of Japan, Mr. Yoichi Anami. The symbolic handover event was held at the Prime Minister’s Office, which was witnessed by H.E. Mr. Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga.

Japan and Tonga share common interests in the rugby world but most significantly in pursuing career opportunities for rugby players of today and the future. Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, Deputy Prime Minister of Tonga and the Government of Tonga’s Rugby Union Board member, acknowledged the donation of rugby balls, which he affirmed will be distributed to young rugby players in schools, and will also be used in community rugby tournaments.
