Japan GGP official commissioning of the project for upgrading of water supply system for Puke village

Commissioning of the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project on May 12th, 2016

On Thursday, 12 of May 2016, the Government of Japan and the people of Puke Village celebrated the commissioning of the Project for Upgrading of Water Supply System for the village, funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, GGP.

His Excellency Mr. Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga attended the handover ceremony in Puke. Present at the ceremony were Dr. Kilisitina Puleiku from the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Aloma Johansson from the R.Albin Johansson & Co along with the Water Committee and the People of Puke.

His Excellency Mr. Numata in his keynote address congratulated the completion of the Project and its significance and necessity in ensuring access to water and sanitation for all. “We are happy to witness the establishment of an environment friendly, safe and sustainable water supply system, that will become the basis of the further development of the village,” stated the Ambassador.

Dr. Kilisitina Puleiku in briefing the project stated that, “this project is significantly contribution to one of the Primary Outcome Objectives of Tonga Strategic Development Framework, which is to maintain and develop infrastructure that gears towards the improvement of the everyday lives of the people of Tonga, and more importantly to encourage healthy living within the community and Tonga as a whole.”

Mr. Malolo Tupou, Town Office and Chairperson of Puke Village Water Committee in his vote of thanks acknowledged the generous assistance from the people and the Government of Japan, and the openhanded collaboration from stakeholders. The Puke Village Water Committee sought for Japan’s assistance in 2013 prioritizing efficient access and stable distribution of water to over 700 population of Puke, and replacement of the deteriorating old water supply system installed in the early 1970’s.

Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects was introduced in 1989. This epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the People and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and also hope to strengthen the warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga.
