  • Japanese Film "Robo-G" featured in Tonga
  • The final Japanese Film Screening event in Nuku'alofa for 2013 featured one of Japan's best -selling family films titled "Robo-G." His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, and Mrs. Kyoko Hamuro welcomed audiences in all screening events held last week for Primary School students as well as for the General Public. Amongst spectators who attended the public screening at the Tapu Tukulolo Hall of Tupou Tertiary Institute on Friday night, November 22, was Mrs. Tupou Pasikala Fiu, Honorary Consul of France in Tonga, together with her family and other guests.

Robo-G is directed by one of Japan's well known film directors and screenwriters Shinobu Yaguchi. The film narrates a funny storyline of three employees of the Kimura Electrical Company who are due to present a new robot at a robot exhibition, but after an accident in which the robot is destroyed, to save their job and the company reputation, they decide to hire an actor to get inside the remains of the robot. Robo-G was released in Japan in January 2012.

The first screening of Robo-G was held on Wednesday, November 13th for students of the Houma Government Primary School, a 30 minute drive from the capital. The second screening was held for students of Ngele'ia Government Primary School on Wednesday, November 20th, and a screening for the General Public was held on Friday night, November 22nd. Each of schools was the beneficiary of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroot Project.

Japanese films are rarely available in DVD shops in Nuku'alofa, hence the efforts of the Embassy of Japan, the Japan Foundation, and Tonga's Ministry of Internal Affairs to host Japanese Film Screening events annually aim at providing opportunities to the people of Tonga to watch a Japanese movie. These Japanese Film Screening events are also a platform to help enhance the knowledge and understanding of viewers into the lifestyle and culture of the people of Japan.
