Result of the Tonga Soroban Competition in Tongatapu

The Tonga Soroban Competition, co-hosted annually by the Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga and the Ministry of Education and Training has concluded its final round in Tongatapu. Three district competitions were held on September 2nd, 4th and 9th, 2014.
45 primary schools in Tongatapu participated in the competitions. Approximately 800 students from Class 3 to Class 5 competed with each other in the following three categories: written examination, oral examination and flash examination.
The competitions were held in the Central, Eastern and Western districts of Tongatapu. The Government Primary School of Kolomotu’a ranked first in the Central district competition held last Tuesday, September 2 at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall. The district competition for the Eastern schools was held last Thursday, September 4 at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall, and the Government Primary School of Lapaha ranked first in the competition, where 21 schools competed. The competition in the Western district was held on Tuesday, September 9th at the Government Primary School of Houma. The Government Primary School of Hofoa ranked first in this competition where 13 schools competed. The top 30% in the written examination from Class 3 and Class 4 will represent the Tongatapu Primary Schools in the National Competition to be held in Nuku’alofa, in March 2015.
Soroban education started in Tonga since the 1970’s and has served as one of the foundations of long-standing and strong ties between Japan and Tonga, and has been incorporated as a compulsory element of the mathematics subjects from Class 3 to Class 5 in Government Primary Schools in the Kingdom.
This year’s competition started in Ha’apai on July 31st and Vava’u on August 14th before the district competitions in Tongatapu. ‘Eua will round up the series of district competitions on October 16th before concluded with the National competition in March 2015.
The series of Soroban Competitions are supported by the Tonga Soroban Education Association, JICA Tonga office, and Japan International Soroban Diffusion Foundation.
