  • Japanese Films “Ballad” and “Shin Chan” featured in Tonga
  • The Embassy of Japan in collaboration with the Japan Foundation hosted the 2014 Japanese Film Screening programs which featured two Japanese movies, titled: “Shin Chan” and “Ballad”. The screenings were held on Friday, 17th October 2014.

H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga welcomed the first audience for “Shin Chan” at Beulah Primary School in Vaini village at 10:00am, while the second movie which featured “Ballad” for the general public was held at the Tapu Tukulolo Hall of Tupou Tertiary Institute at Fasi mo e Afi at 7:00pm.

“Shin Chan” is about a little boy who goes back in time to help a Samurai and a beautiful Princess fight against an evil Lord.

Similarly, “Ballad” is a romantic movie which also shows the journey back in time of a young boy into Japan’s medieval era of Warring States. It shows a forbidden love between a lowly Samurai and a beautiful princess who fight against a fiery tempered Lord and his powerful domain.

H.E. Dr. Hamuro said he hoped that the films would be enjoyable and inspirational for exploring Japanese culture and its historical background.

Japanese films are rarely available in DVD shops in Nuku‘alofa hence the joint efforts of the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation to host Japanese Film Screening event annually, aiming to provide opportunities for the people of Tonga to watch Japanese movies. These Japanese Film Screening events are also a platform to enhance the knowledge of the Tongan audience on lifestyle and culture of the people of Japan.
