  • The Soroban Competition, co-hosted annually by the Embassy of Japan in the Kingdom of Tonga and the Ministry of Education and Training has concluded its final round for Tongatapu Primary Schools on, 25 August 2015.

A total of 47 primary schools participated in this year’s competitions, bringing approximately 900 soroban students from Class 3 to Class 5 to compete in three categories; written examination, oral examination and flash examination.

Hala’ovave Government Primary School ranked first in the competition for Central District Schools that was held at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall on 18 August. Lapaha Government Primary School ranked first in the competition held for Eastern District Schools on 20th, at the Beulah College Vakaua Hall, in Vaini, and the Hofoa Government Primary School ranked first in the Western District competition held on 25th August at the Alai-Pulotu Hall, in Te’ekiu village. (kindly refer to attachment for competition result)

The top 30% students in the written examination from Class 3 and Class 4 from each district competition in Tongatapu, will represent the Tongatapu Primary Schools in the National Soroban Competition, to be held in Nuku’alofa in March next year.

Soroban education started in Tonga since the 1970’s and has served as one of the foundations of long-standing and strong ties between Japan and Tonga. Soroban has also been proven to contribute to strengthen mathematical skills of primary students, hence incorporated as a compulsory element of the mathematic subjects from Class 3 to Class 5 in Government Primary Schools in the Kingdom.

The Tonga Soroban Competition is co-hosted annually by the Embassy of Japan in Tonga and the Ministry of Education and Training since 2010. The Competition started with an annual Regional Competitions for the outer islands before to the National Competition in Nuku’alofa. This year’s competition started in Vava’u on Friday 24th July, in Ha’apai on August 6th, and in Tongatapu on August 18th, 20th and 25th, and later in ‘Eua on September 10th before the National competition in March 2016.

The series of Soroban Competitions are supported by the Tonga Soroban Education Association, JICA Tonga Office, and Japan International Soroban Diffusion Foundation.
