  • The head of the United Nations Office welcomed the resolution adopted by the General Assembly as World Tsunami Awareness Day
  • The head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction welcomed the resolution adopted by consensus of the 70th UN General Assembly as World Tsunami Awareness Day on 22nd December in NY.

  • The resolution was proposed by Japan and 142 joint countries for taking action of the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals and designated 5th November as the date to commemorate the World Tsunami Awareness Day. The resolution will help for understanding of tsunami disaster risk for prevention and mitigation and for the development and implementation of appropriate preparedness and effective response to tsunami disaster.

  • The designated date of World Tsunami Awareness Day comes from a Japanese anecdote “Inamura no Hi (the burning of rice shaeaves)” is based on a historical event that took place during a massive tsunami disaster on 5th November, 1854 in Wakayama prefecture, Japan.
