  • On February 4, the Government of Japan handed over the last batch of the Non-Project Grant Aid for Provision of Japanese Small and Medium sized enterprises Products 2013 (hereafter, 2013 NPGA) to Tonga’s Ministry of Health. H.E. Mr. Yukio Numata made the official handover of the medical equipment at Vaiola Hospital’s Multi-purpose Hall.

  • In the remarks from H.E. Ambassador Numata, he emphasized the close and existing friendly relationship between Japan and Tonga for the betterment, wellbeing and welfare of their people. “This grant aid designed to support the promotion of the economic and social development of developing countries by utilizing the unique efficient and user-friendly technology of Japanese small and medium sized enterprises. The purpose of the provision is to meet development goals in several sectors including health sector, to respond to the economic and social needs of developing countries,” he said.

    The handover of the 2013 NPGA with the total amount of Japanese Yen 200million, formalized Japan’s assistance to Tonga’s development effort in its disaster preparedness benefited three Ministries in Tonga. The first batch of equipment was donated to NEMO, the second batch was donated to Tonga Fire Service and the last batch being donated today to Tonga’s Ministry of Health. The total cost of equipments donated to Ministry of Health is amounted to $58million Japanese Yen (equivalent to 1million pa’anga) included 2 mobile x-ray units, 2 auto distillation apparatus, 7 infant incubator, 9 infant warmer, 5 phototherapy units, 14 infusion pump, 3 emergency medical kid, 2 suction units, 2 doppler fetal detector, and other equipments.

    In the remarks from the Hon. Minister of Health, Dr. Saia Piukala, he thanked the Ambassador of Japan and his Government for the medical equipment which he said would “go a long way in improving the delivery of quality health services to the people of Tonga.” Moreover, the longstanding relationship with Japan began its “first implementation of the first grant aid in Tonga in 1990.”

    The 2013 NPGS is expected to support Tonga’s efforts to implement the Tonga Strategic Development Framework, and portrays Japan’s determined commitments to contribute to the betterment of welfare of the People of the Kingdom of Tonga and the achievement of human security.
