Present at the ceremony held at the St. George Government Building were Hon. Pohiva Tuionetoa, Minister of Finance and National Planning, Hon. Penisimani Fifita, Minister of Education and Training, Rev Dr. Mele’ana Puloka, President of the Free Wesleyan Church Education and representatives of the project recipients from FWC Fasi-mo e-Afi Kindergarten, Lavengatonga Village Water Committee and Talafo’ou Village Water Committee.
H.E Mr. Tetsuya Ishii in his key note address emphasized the significants of providing early childhood education, and a liable water supply for communities. “Early childhood education plays a large role in the growth of a child and their future educational performance, leading to the creation of the base of the nation building,” he said.
“Access to water is also an essential part of life. I myself have experienced water shortage during the Cyclone Gita in February and I know how difficult life can be without 24 hours access to water supply and I am happy that we can assist Lavengatonga and Talafo’ou village in upgrading their water supply system,” stated His Excellency.
In the vote of thanks by Mr. ‘Epeli Finau from Talafo’ou village water committee acknowledged the assistance from the people and Government of Japan. “Your help guarantees better health, better life for us and we thank you.” Japan’s assistance will enable the upgrading of the village water supply system for Talafo’ou and Lavengatonga villages with new diesel water pump systems, water tanks and tank stands as well as the construction of a new kindergarten building for the FWC Fasi-mo e-Afi Kindergarten.
Japan’s GGP was introduced in 1990 to respond directly to the basic human needs at the grass-roots level communities, and today over 260 GGP project have been implemented in Tonga and throughout its island groups. These assistances also epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and continue to enrich the existing warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people and the Kingdom of Tonga.
