Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for 2022

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) of the Japanese Government offers scholarships for 2022 to Tongan citizens who wish to study in Japan.  Its aim is to foster human resources who will become bridges of friendship between Tonga and Japan through study in Japan and who will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world.  All application procedures for scholarships are conducted through the Embassy of Japan in Tonga. 

Special procedural relief for the applicants who live in Outer Islands (Niuatoputapu, Niuafo'ou, Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua only) . Due to the complicating circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Embassy of Japan will accept e-mailed applications ONLY from applicants who are currently residing in any of the aforementioned Island groups of Tonga.

However, please be advised that applicants must be take our written exams in Tongatapu for our screening process.  Furthermore, on the day of written exams, applicants must hand in to the Embassy your original applications with all necessary required documents including a Health Certificate.

Please note that applicants who live in Tongatapu must hand in original application forms to the Embassy of Japan in Nuku’alofa.

Undergraduate and Specialized Training college students(Arrival in Japan: April 2022/ or September to October 2022)

Undergraduate Students
Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1997.  This scholarship is available to applicants who want to undertake their undergraduate degree in a Japanese university.
 
Specialized Training college students
Applicants must be born between on or after April 2, 1997.  This scholarship offers a postsecondary course at a specialized training college.

2. Application Forms
Applicants must submit your application or enquire to the Embassy of Japan by 4:00pm 14th June 2021.

  • The submitted documents will not be returned.
  • The Certificate of Health is not necessary at the application stage for applicants from Tongatapu.  Only successful applicants will be required to submit after primary selection.
  • Applicants from outer islands group must submit a Health Certificate at the application stage.

Research Students (Arrival in Japan: April 2022/September or October 2022)

Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1987. Each applicant must have an undergraduate degree or equivalent or a higher level of academic ability than a university or college graduate for admission to either a master’s or doctoral course.
