Fotua Soroban Students won Ha’apai District Competition

Winners of the Soroban Competition for Primary Schools of Ha‘apai islands were awarded their prizes on Thursday, 27 May 2021, and the best overall school was won by the Government Middle School of Fotua.  
The competition was held at the Ha’apai High School with over 60 primary students participated. Fotua Government Middle School won the best overall prize, while in 2nd place was the GPS Faleloa, and GPS Pangai in 3rd place.

An encouragement letter to the young student from H.E. Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga was read at the competition. In this letter the Ambassador encouraged students to learn soroban as it is good not only for calculation skills, but also enhancement of concentration and confidence. He appreciated the efforts and commitment of both students and their teachers, as well as soroban officers of the Ministry of Education and Training who have been co-hosting the competition for the past 10 years.

Top students in the classes 3, 4 and 5 were awarded prizes in the written, oral and flash examination, and Top students in written section will advance to the the National Soroban Competition in Nuku’alofa in November.
The Soroban Competition in Ha’apai kicks off the District Competitions for 2021. The other islands including Tongatapu are scheduled to have their competition next month, June.

The Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Education and Training have been collaborating the district competitions since 2010 with the support of the Japan International Soroban Diffusion Foundation, Tonga Soroban Education Association and JICA Tonga Office.
