Japan’s GGP Handover of a new Classroom Building for Government Middle School of Kolomotu’a

The Embassy of Japan in Tonga and the Government Middle School of Kolomotu’a celebrated the completion of a new classroom building, funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Project, or GGP on Thursday, 30 September 2021.
His Excellency Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga was the guest of honour at the handover ceremony attended by Hon. Hu‘akavameiliku Minister for Education and Training. Also, Mr.Siaosi Pohiva, People’s Representative to the Legislative Assembly for Tongatapu Constituency # 1, Dr. Tangikina Moimoi Steen, CEO for Ministry of Education and Training along with Education Officers, Representative from the Ministry of Finance, Representative from the Parents Teachers Association, Principal, Teachers and students of Kolomotu’a Government Middle School were present at the ceremony.
In addressing the event, His Excellency Mr. MUNENAGA emphasized the priority to ensure that all children enjoy their education in comfort. “Education, especially primary education is extremely important to help children develop their capabilities and enhance their self-esteem. A good education is definitely a basis for the development and prosperity of the Kingdom,” he said. With Japan’s support he hopes the circumstances for learning will be improved and all the students will study harder towards their promising future.
Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, Minister for Education and Training thanked the people and Government of Japan for their ongoing assistance, and the many significant support to the education sector in Tonga. The new classroom building has two rooms divided by a partition wall, that is to be also utilized as a hall. The Kolomotu’a GMS was founded in 1960. The Parents and Teachers Association sought for Japan’s assistance for the additional classroom to accommodate the growing number of students.
Japan’s GGP has now benefited over 300 projects in the Kingdom of Tonga since it was introduced in the 1990s. The Government of Japan first assisted the Kolomotu’a GMS with the construction of a library and bathroom facility in 2008.
