H.E. Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, joined the Hon. Samiu Kuita Vaipulu, Acting Prime Minister of Tonga, and the Hon. Fekitamoeloa 'Utoikamanu, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, in the opening of the Remembrance Exhibition for the Hunga-Tonga Hunga-Ha'apai volcanic eruption and ensuing tsunami.
When the unprecedented disaster struck Tonga on 15 January 2022, the Government of Japan responded with the historical visits of the Japan Air Self Defense Force, the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, and the Japan Ground Self Defense Force to deliver much needed water supply and other necessities not only to Tongatapu but also the outer islands.
As the Kingdom marks the one year anniversary of this disaster, the people and Government of Japan stands firm on its commitment to help the people of Tonga, as we remember the lives lost and the people displaced by it.
