NPGA Handover to Tonga’s Ministry of Fisheries (2nd batch)

His Excellency Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga handed over 5 pickup trucks funded through Japan’s Non-Project Grant Aid Assistance, NPGA to Tonga’s Ministry of Fisheries on Friday, 26 May 2023.
 
Lord Fohe, Acting Minister for Fisheries received the donated vehicles during the Handover Ceremony at the Ministry’s Office in Sopu, Nuku‘alofa.
 
The pickup trucks are second batch of a $1.5million US dollars NPGA assistance to Tonga’s Ministry of Fisheries, signed in May last year. The first batch provided diving computers, underwater cameras and tally counters were handed over last December, while the third and final batch consisting research equipment, research and fishing boats are expected to arrive later the year.
 
H.E. Mr. MUNENAGA at the Handover Ceremony emphasized the importance of the fishing industry to the people of Tonga, especially for their livelihood. “I am very proud that since 1970’s Japan has contributed to the development of Tonga’s fishery. Today’s provisions will contribute to strengthen the Ministry’s activities not only in Tongatapu, but also in the outer islands,” he said.
 
Lord Fohe, acknowledged the assistance from the people and Government of Japan,. “On behalf of the Government of Tonga and the Ministry of Fisheries, I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the people and the Government of Japan for this great donation.”
 
Japan’s NPGA has benefitted many Government Ministries through the provision of multimillion worth of equipment, promoting economic and social development of the Kingdom of Tonga.
