Four GGP Projects signed for Tonga

The Grant Contracts to formalize Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project, to upgrade three educational facilities and one village water supply system for Tonga, were signed on Friday 25 August 2023.
H.E. Mr. MUNENAGA Kensaku, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga signed the contracts with signatories, witnessed by Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, Minister for Finance and Minister for Revenue and Customs. Present also at the signing ceremony were Hon. Taniela Fusimalohi, People’s Representative for ‘Eua to Parliament, Mrs. Kilisitina Tuaimei‘api, Chief Executive Officer for Ministry of Finance, and Representatives from benefitting schools, communities, contractors and auditing companies for each project.
Japan’s GGP assistance was established in 1990 to support various challenges in small, grass-roots level communities for basic human needs.
“Regarding today’s four new projects, their objectives vary, based on the immediate needs on each community. I hope that these project will play an important role in building stronger and more resilient societies in the Kingdom, and that our friendship will continue to be enriched by our cooperation,” said Ambassador MUNENAGA.
The first project will improve the water supply system for Te’ekiu village, western Tongatapu, funding the relocation of a new water system to a new and safe water source, installation of new water pumps, new pump houses and new main pipes. The second project will construct a new classroom building for ‘Ahopanilolo Technical Institute. The third project will fund renovation for existing four classrooms of ‘Ohonu’a Government Middle School in ‘Eua, while the last project will construct a new classroom for kindergarten class at the Pangaimotu Government Middle School in Vava’u.
Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti thanked the Ambassador for the ongoing assistances from the People and Government of Japan, and was particularly happy with the projects to benefit the schools in the outer islands. “These generous assistances have helped our local community’s development in achieving a more equitable distribution of economic and social benefits and directly aligned with the primary objectives of the Tonga Strategic Development Framework,” said the Minister.
