The Embassy of Japan and the Government Middle School of Popua celebrated the completion of a new classroom building, funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Project (GGP) on Tuesday, 25 February 2025.
His Excellency Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga handed over the new building in a ceremony, attended by Mr. ‘Isikeli Oko, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Education and Training.
“I believe that education is the foundation for a bright future for everyone. It is our social responsibility to provide a certain educational environment for young students equally.”
“I hope that our GGP, including today’s project will continue to play an important role in building stronger and more resilient societies in the Kingdom, and that the warm and close friendship between Japan and Tonga will continue to be enriched by our cooperation,” said Ambassador INAGAKI in his keynote address at the handover ceremony.
He applauded the dedication and collaboration of all stakeholders in the successful completion of the new classroom building, and challenged the same level of commitment to its maintenance for the benefit of the future generations.
Mr. ‘Isikeli Oko, conveyed the Ministry of Education’s deepest gratitude for the valuable assistance from the people and Government of Japan, in prioritizing the academic development of Tongan children.
The GMS Popua was established in 1986 and first received classroom building through Japan’s GGP in the year 2004. Due to the growing number of students the Parents and Teachers Association of the school sought for Japan’s GGP again last year, and was granted another classroom building. The new building will be the new classroom for their Forms 2 students.
