Japan formalized Two Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) for Tonga

The Grant Contracts formalizing Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project, GGP for two new projects for the Kingdom of Tonga were signed on Friday, 24 October 2025 in Nuku’alofa.
Mr. Toshiyuki Daishoji, Acting Ambassador of Japan to Tonga signed the contracts with the recipient communities.
The ceremony was also attended by Hon. Kapelieli Lanumata, the Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Rev. Dr. ‘Ungatea Kata, the President of the Free Wesleyan Church Schools, Mrs. Kilisitina Tuaimei’api, CEO for Ministry of Finance, contractors of each projects and representatives from the communities.
Japan’s GGP assistance will finance the construction of a new Evacuation Centre and Community Hall for ‘Eueiki Island, as well as the renovation work for the Cooking Facility for Tupou College, Toloa.
In his remarks, Mr. Daishoji stated, “The two projects signed today each have distinct purposes, such as supporting disaster recovery and improving the educational environment. I believe these projects will play a vital role in building a more resilient society in the Kingdom of Tonga, and I sincerely hope that the friendship between our two countries will continue to flourish through such cooperation.”
Mrs. Kilisitina Tuaimei’api expressed gratitude for the continued support from the Government of Japan to Tonga. "Japan's support through the GGP has supported the development of local communities in Tonga. We are committed to ensuring that this support is managed effectively and brings about sustainable social and economic transformation in people's lives.”
In her vote of thanks, Lady ‘Amelia Ma'afu, Treasurer of the Tupou College PTA, acknowledged Japan’s assistance to a long-awaited project for the college. “The vital initiative will transform our food infrastructure, making it possible to provide healthier and more sustainable meals to over 1,000 students and staff at Tupou College.”
The signatories were Mr. Sinipata Toutai Muli, Chairperson of the ‘Eueiki Village Committee, and Lady ‘Amelia Ma‘afu, the Treasurer of the Tupou College PTA.
