Japan’s GGP Handover of upgraded classroom building for GMS ‘Ohonua

On 17 February 2026, a handover ceremony was held for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) project, “The Project for the Improvement of ‘Ohonua Primary and Middle School.”
H.E. Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, handed over the upgraded classroom building during a ceremony attended by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Education and Training, the PTA President, the school principal, and many students, who gathered to celebrate the completion of the project.
In his remarks, Ambassador INAGAKI expressed his sincere appreciation for the efforts and dedication of involved stakeholders in the completion of the Project. He reiterated that education forms the foundation of a bright future and expressed his hope that the project will contribute to building a stronger and more resilient society in Tonga.
On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Training, CEO Mr. ‘Isikeli Oko conveyed his profound gratitude to the Government and people of Japan, noting that the assistance has significantly contributed to transforming lives of children and ensuring a safe learning environment.
Japan’s GGP assistance was permitted to address shortage of classrooms caused by the increase in student enrollment. The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme was introduced to the Kingdom of Tonga in 1990 to support community-level development needs in developing countries. To date, over 300 projects have been implemented across communities in Tonga.
