Japan’s GGP Handover of the Water Supply for Kanokupolu Village

On 21 July 2026, a handover ceremony for The Project for the Water Supply System in Kanokupolu Village, implemented under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), was held. Mr. IWASAKI Taira, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, officially handed over the newly completed water supply system to the relocated Kanokupolu community. The ceremony was attended by government officials, members of the Water Committee, and many villagers, who gathered to celebrate the completion of the project.
In his remarks, Mr. Iwasaki referred to the devastating tsunami that struck Tonga and expressed his hope that the relocation of the Kanokupolu community to a new settlement at a higher elevation would significantly reduce the impact of future disasters and provide a safer living environment for the residents.
Ms. ʻOfa Faokula, Principal Economist of the Aid Management & Resilience Development Division, Ministry of Finance, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Government and the people of Japan, stating that the new water supply system would serve as a valuable asset for the community, not only in their daily lives but also during emergencies, for many years to come.
This project was funded by the Government of Japan in response to a request from the Royal Palace Office of Tonga. It provided 2,543m of new communal water pipelines for the new Kanokupolu settlement established for residents who were displaced by the 2022 volcanic eruption and tsunami.
The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) was introduced in the Kingdom of Tonga in 1990 to address development needs at the community level. Since then, more than 300 projects have been implemented across various sectors throughout the country.
