Signing of Two Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP)
2026/10/23
On 21 October 2026, the Government of Japan formalized two community development projects for the Kingdom of Tonga, funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP).
The projects signed on this occasion were: (1) the provision of small-scale agricultural machinery for MORDI Tonga Trust; and (2) the construction of a new Evacuation Centre and Community Hall for the people of Talihau village in Vava’u.
Through this GGP, Japan will provide two new tractors and ten types of attachments to MORDI for roving workshops and community use, envisaging increased work efficiency and agricultural production and the income of farmers in rural districts. Also, a multi-purpose evacuation centre will be constructed on high ground for the village of Talihau, in Vava’u. The new building will serve as a facility to secure the lives of residents in time of natural disasters, and will also be a vibrant community hub for daily activities.
His Excellency Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, reiterated the significance of each project in addressing priorities for the communities.
“It is our sincere hope that these projects will play an important role in building stronger and more resilient societies in this Kingdom and will bring lasting benefits to the people of Tonga and further deepen the warm bond of friendship between our two countries.”
‘Ofa Fa’okula, Chief Economist of the Ministry of Finance, noted that the two projects signed on this occasion symbolize the friendly relations between Japan and Tonga, expressing gratitude for Japan’s continued support.
The GGP recipients also expressed their appreciation for Japan’s assistance and their hope that the projects would contribute to improving the daily lives of many people.
The GGP was introduced to the Kingdom of Tonga in 1990 to address community-level development needs in developing countries. To date, more than 300 projects spanning various sectors have been implemented.
