Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for 2021
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) of the Japanese Government offers scholarships for 2021 to Tongan Citizens who wish to study in Japan. Its aim is to foster human resources who will become bridges of friendship between Tonga and Japan through study in Japan and who will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world. All application procedures for scholarships are conducted through the Embassy of Japan in Tonga.
Special procedural relief for Tongan MEXT scholarship 2021 applicants who live in Outer Islands (Niuatoputapu, Niuafo'ou, Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua only) or who are stuck in overseas countries now. Due to the complicating circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Embassy of Japan will accept e-mailed applications ONLY from applicants who are currently stuck in foreign countries or residing in any of the aforementioned Island groups of Tonga.
However, please be advised that applicants must be take our written exams in Tongatapu for our screening process. Furthermore, on the day of written exams, applicants must hand in to the Embassy your original applications with all necessary required documents including a Health Certificate.
Please note that applicants who live in Tongatapu must hand application forms to the Embassy of Japan in Tonga.

1. Research Students (Arrival in Japan: September or October 2021)
Applicants must have been born on or after April 2, 1986 and a college graduate (includes prospective graduates). Or you must have completed 16 years of schooling. This scholarship offers to undertake research or a graduate degree in Japan.

2. Undergraduate Students (Arrival in Japan: April 2021)
Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1996 and have completed 12 years of school education or have completed courses in a school comparable to a high school (includes prospective graduates). Aavailable to applicants who want to undertake their undergraduate degree in a Japanese university.

3. Specialized Training College Students (Arrive in Japan: April 2021)
Applicants must be born between on or after April 2, 1996 and have completed 12 years of schooling or have completed school education comparable to a Japanese high school (includes prospective graduates). This scholarship offers a postsecondary course at a specialized training college.
