  • On Friday, July 26th 2013, the Embassy of Japan held the official opening for the exhibition of the Kumamoto Artpolis at the Tungi Colonnade Conference Rooms in Nuku'alofa. The guest of honor, Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, the Acting Prime Minister was present at the ceremony along with Hon. Dr. 'Ana Maui Taufe'ulungaki, Minister for Education and Training, and other distinguished guests.

    His Excellency, Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga in his remarks noted that the exhibition highlighted Japan's architects, and is responsible for showcasing the birth of Japanese modern architecture. "Sharing the different aspects of Japanese culture is integral to keeping and strengthening the friendship between Japan and Tonga. I sincerely hope that through this exhibition, the people of Tonga will be able to deepen their understanding of Japan and its culture." said the Ambassador.

    Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, stated in his remarks, that chances like this exhibition is welcomed by the people and Government of Tonga. He acknowledged the efforts and collaboration of commemorating the significance of architecture.

    The Kumamoto Artpolis was initiated in 1988 as a system of recommending architects within and outside the Kumamoto Prefecture of Kyushu, Japan. It comprises of 76 photo panels of architectural works, each photo panel includes architectural data, English commentary and drawing plans demonstrated in a 1200mm x 900mm frame size. The Artpolis is a travelling exhibition and has travelled many countries including Singapore, Morocco, Germany, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The Kingdom of Tonga is the first Pacific Islands to hold the exhibition of the Kumamoto Artpolis.

    The Exhibition is now open for public viewing from 9:00am to 5:00pm on Mondays to Saturdays until Tuesday, August 13th 2013. The Exhibition Centre is located within the Tungi Colonnade, 2nd floor Conference Room.
