  • Ms. Fisi'itotoa 'Ahofono Lihau, the winner of the Japanese Speech Contest for 2013, paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, prior to her departure to participate in the Japanese Language Program in Kansai, Japan, on Tuesday 27 August 2013. H.E. Dr. Hamuro congratulated Ms. Lihau on winning the Speech Contest and encouraged her to further advance her Japanese language skills and deepen her knowledge of Japan. The Ambassador also expressed his wish for Ms. Lihau to enjoy her first visit to Japan.

    As the winner of the Japanese Speech Contest, Ms. Lihau was awarded the prize of participating in a two week Japanese Language Study Program held in Kansai, Japan, from August 28th until September 10th, 2013. The Program is offered by the Japan Foundation's Japanese Language Institution Kansai for students with an outstanding record in Japanese studies. The study program comprises of a variety of activities offered to deepen the visiting participant's understanding of the language, culture, and society of the people of Japan.

    The program for 2013 will include: Japanese Language Class consisting of home visits, lecture in Kansai dialect and an introduction to websites; Training Trips and Exchange Program, which will include Trips to Tokyo/Kyoto/Hirosima and home visits; and the Culture Experience Program, which will include calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, kimono/yukata wearing, taiko/Japanese drums and aikido training to name a few.

    Ms. Lihau is currently a 2nd year student at the Tonga Institute of Education and will join other outstanding Japanese language learners from over 60 countries around the world in this year's program. More information on the program is available in the following website:

    Ms. Lihau has resumed her studies as a 2nd Year Student at the Tonga Institute of Education. She looks forward to her 3rd Year with the completion of the first ever Japanese Language Laboratory built in Nuku'alofa at the Tonga Institute of Education under the Government of Japan's assistance.
