  • Japan Upgrades Water Supply System for Mala'evakapuna Community
  • On October 4th 2013, the Government of Japan handed over the Project for Upgrading of the Water Supply System for the Mala'evakapuna Community. His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga, attended at the handover ceremony at the Mala'evakapuna Community. His Serene Highnesses Prince and Princes Tu'ipelehake also attended the ceremony, along with Lord Vaea, Minister for Internal Affairs.

H.E. Dr. Hamuro mentioned that the GGP was also the instrument for the Embassy to work together with the communities as well as the catalyst to promote inclusive local partnership. H.E. Dr. Hamuro added that the GGP would empower each of communities and encourage them to liaise with potential partners so as to work together for the betterment of lives with the spirit of share and collaboration.

The project was funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan. Since the year 1993, Japan has implemented a total of 247 GGP projects here in Tonga. Japan has funded more than 100 water supply projects, or around 40% of total projects. It is expected that the new water supply system benefits more than 23 households of the community.
