January 31, 2014

  • Japan Commits to a Mega Solar Power Plant
  • His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga together with Lord Tu'ivakano, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga celebrated the Ground Breaking Ceremony of the $1.6 Billion Japanese Yen project for Introduction of a Micro-Grid System with Renewable Energy for the Tonga Energy Roadmap, on Friday, 31st January 2014 at Vaini village, in Tongatapu.

The Government of Japan's assistance installing a micro-grid control system at the Maama Mai Solar Farm, enables Tonga Power Limited, the implementing agency of the project, to expand its renewable energy power production capacity to implement the Tonga Energy Roadmap. The assistance will also provide a 1 Mega Watt Photovoltaic (PV) generator at Vaini, with another micro-grid system which will be connected with the existing hybrid power generation system located at Popua village.

Ambassador Dr. Hamuro in his address said, "Tonga has demonstrated its leadership to promote renewable energy in the Pacific and I am pleased to see that the Government of Japan has supported the efforts of the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga."

"With these control systems, the generators in Tongatapu can better coordinate each other so that it can minimize unnecessary loads and damages caused by fluctuation of power generation by PV generators, and improve the existing hybrid power generation system," added Ambassador Dr. Hamuro.

The installation of the new systems is expected to be completed by the end of March 2015.
