On March 25th 2014, the Government of Japan handed over the Project for Upgrading of Mailefihi Siu'ilikutapu College Boy's Dormitory in Neiafu, Vava'u. H.E Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga handed over the completed project on behalf of the people and Government of Japan during a commissioning ceremony held at 10:00am at the College's compound. Also present at the ceremony was Rev. Dr. Tevita Palefau, Vice President for Education, Director for Higher Education and Director for Tupou Tertiary Institute from the Free Wesleyan Church headquarter in Nuku'alofa.

H.E. Dr. Hamuro in his keynote address reiterated significance of a healthier and safer educational environment for all. He said, "As we are all aware, human resources and country's growth are two sides of a coin, and access to a good education is an extremely important component in a society, as it allows for communities to grow and advance."

"With an upgrade due, this will mean a safer and more hygienic living environment for the boarding students," added Ambassador Dr. Hamuro.

Ms. Mele Loloahi Moimoi, Officer In-charge for Outer Islands Schools of the Free Wesleyan Church in the vote of thanks, expressed the heartfelt appreciation of the Free Wesleyan Church Education System and the Mailefihi Siu'ilikutapu College for the people and the Government of Japan's assistance. She said the new facilities will aid the students in their studies and inspiring better academic results.

The project was funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, GGP of the Government of Japan. (Refer to Project Fact Sheet for Detail of the Project) Mailefihi Siu'ilikutapu College sought for Japan's assistance in 2012 prioritizing a safer and healthier environment for their student. The project will benefit 341 student intake in 2014, and 38 teachers.
