  • Japan handed over the Project for Upgrading of Beulah Primary School
  • On May 9th 2014, the Government of Japan handed over the Project for Upgrading of Beulah Primary School. H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga handed over the completed new classroom building on behalf of the people and Government of Japan during the commissioning ceremony held from 10:00am, at the School’s compound at Vaini, Tongatapu.

    Present at the ceremony were Hon. Kavamoli Ma‘afu; Hon. Dr. ‘Ana Maui Taufe‘ulungaki, Minister for Education and Training; Mr. Sione Havea Taione, People’s Representative of the Legislative Assembly for Tongatapu Constituency # 8 and Pastor Sione Kakala Moala, President of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

    H.E. Dr. Hamuro, in his keynote address, emphasized significance of development. “Development is crucial in achieving a just and equitable society which is the essence of the Kingdom of Tonga. The process of development should be comprehensive and education is a necessary in helping people attain their goals in life. That is also the epitome of human security and inclusive growth that the Government of Japan endeavours to support.”

    Dr. ‘Ana Taufe’ulungaki, Minister of Education and Training expressed gratitude to the Ambassador for continuing generous support for education in Tonga from the Government and the People of Japan. “You have put many happy smiles on the faces of our children.”

    “The Japanese Grass-roots Assistance Programme, which targets the most vulnerable communities and groups in our society, continues to provide much needed assistance to schools and communities in rural areas and the outer islands. Without this assistance, such communities would not be able to afford to upgrade or build new school facilities and infrastructure or to provide quality teaching and learning resources,” stated Dr. Taufe’ulungaki.

    Beulah Primary School Parents and Teachers Association sought for Japan’s assistance prioritizing a safer and healthier environment for their students. Funding of this Project was made through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, GGP of the Government of Japan. (Refer to Project Fact Sheet for Detail of the Project)
