  • H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga congratulated the successful participation of Ms. Malia ‘Aniteunete Ohi ‘Ofa of Tonga in the 2014 Short-Term Training Program for Foreign Teachers of Japanese Language (hereinafter abbreviated as the Program) held in Saitama, Japan.

Upon Malia ‘Ofa’s return, she paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Hamuro on Monday 14th July 2014 where she reported her pleasantly surprising and fruitful experiences during her visit Japan. H.E. Dr. Hamuro was also pleasantly surprised to see her communicating more fluently in Japanese after her trip. H.E. Dr. Hamuro encouraged her to keep up her studies of Japanese language and teaching in order to put into practice what she learned from the Program.

As a result of participation to the Program, Malia’s teaching methodology has been further enriched and she also has become familiar with various aspects of Japanese culture, especially how to dress the casual version of traditional clothes “yukata.”

“I cannot explain how useful the program was to me. It opened up different teaching methods to me which encourages me to come back and put that knowledge into practice when teaching Japanese language in Tonga,” said Malia. Malia has been teaching Japanese Language since 2006, and currently teaches at ‘Eua High School.

The Program is one of the various programs fully funded by the Japan Foundation. It provides foreign teachers of Japanese language with the opportunity to improve their Japanese language skills and teaching methodology, and to deepen their knowledge of Japan. This year, the Program was hosted at Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute in Urawa, Saitama, Japan for two months from May to July, 2014.
