  • Japan handed over Water Supply System for Feletoa Village
  • On September 25th 2014, the Government of Japan handed over the Project for Upgrading of Feletoa Village’s Water Supply System. H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga handed over the upgraded water supply system on behalf of the people and Government of Japan during a commissioning ceremony held at 2:00pm, at Feletoa village in Vava’u.

    The commissioning ceremony was also attended by Hon Dr. Viliami Uasike Latu, Minister for Commerce, Tourism and Labour who is also the People’s Representative of Vava’u Constituency # 16, and the people of Feletoa village.

    H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, in his keynote address, emphasized that Japan’s assistance is a portrayal of her attentiveness to inspire resilient communities at the grass root level by addressing issues of basic human needs and human security, and is an effective instrument to advance development cooperation between Japan and Tonga in pursuance of sustainable development. Ambassador Hamuro also mentioned in his remarks that by 2013, 103 projects on the public welfare sector out of all 252 GGP projects had been implemented in Tonga, including the provision of the systems to secure stable water supply.

    Hon. Dr. Viliami Uasike Latu in his vote of thanks acknowledged the generous assistance from the people and Government of Japan. “Since 1990 the Government of Japan has provided support to the rural and extended communities throughout the Kingdom, and we still continue to benefit from the GGP Program.”

    The Project for upgrading of Feletoa village water supply system is a part of Japan’s Official Development Assistance to Tonga made available through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, or commonly known as GGP. The Embassy of Japan in Tonga, in collaboration with local communities through the GGP, helps improve basic social services in Tonga including through the improvement of infrastructures and qualities of both health and education sectors. Feletoa Village Committee sought for Japan’s assistance prioritizing an efficient management of water supply for the 388 people of the village.     Ambassador Hamuro handed over three upgraded water supply system for Ha’alaufuli, Holonga and Feletoa village, in Vava’u last week.
