March 16, 2015

  • Japan provides assistance to Tonga to improve the capacity of Disaster Risk Management and Disaster Response/Restoration with industrial products from Japan
  • The Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga signed and exchanged notes on “Japan’s Non Project Grant Aid for Provision of Disaster Reduction Equipment in the 2014 Japanese Fiscal Year” (hereafter, 2014 NPGA), on March 16. His Excellency Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga and Honourable ‘Akilisi Pohiva, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga signed and exchanged notes during the signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The provision of the “2014 NPGA” with the total amount of Japanese Yen 300 million (equivalent to approximately 5 million Pa’anga) has been decided to follow up the recent visit of Mr. Kazuyuki Nakane, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan to the Kingdom in February this year as well as the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction hosted by Japan from 14th to 18th March, 2015, as a part of our efforts to share the experiences and lessons learnt from numerous natural disasters including the Great East Japan Earthquake in March, 2011, and was represented by Hon Siaosi Sovaleni, Deputy Prime Minister from the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga.

Since Tonga was ranked the second most vulnerable country in the world to natural disasters in the 2013 World Risk Report, the “2014 NPGA” aims at improving the capacity of Disaster Risk Management and Disaster Response/Restoration as well as supporting the efforts of the Kingdom of Tonga to promote social and economic development through providing foreign currency for the import of disaster reduction related products. The Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga expect to install the equipment to further accelerate Tonga’s efforts towards development by utilizing Japanese expertise in the field of disaster reduction/response and supplementing Japan’s existing cooperation in the Kingdom of Tonga.

The “2014 NPGA” is expected to support Tonga’s efforts to implement the Tonga Strategic Development Framework, and portrays Japan’s determined commitment to contribute to the betterment of welfare of the People in the Kingdom of Tonga and the achievement of human security.
