  • Japan Provides Assistance for 5 Projects to Upgrade Education and Sea Transportation, and Tonga Red Cross in Ha’apai for Inclusive Development
  • The Grant Contracts formalizing the Government of Japan providing assistance in Tonga for 5 grassroots projects to upgrade Education and Sea Transportation, and disaster affected Tonga Red Cross Society in Ha’apai for Inclusive Development were signed between H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga and the representatives of recipient organizations on Tuesday, 17th March, 2015 at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Tatafu Moeaki, CEO of the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

    H.E. Dr. Hamuro in his key note address emphasized the significance of these projects to improve environment of education for future development, to ensure safety of sea transportation for the people in remote island as a means to safeguard access to Basic Human Needs, and to assist Tonga Red Cross Society’s efforts to achieve inclusive development through capacity buildings, including improvement of disaster preparedness and accelerating ongoing reconstruction efforts in Ha’apai.

    “Through the initiation of these projects the Embassy of Japan continues to support social and economic progress and improvement of Human Security in Tonga. These projects will reduce the vulnerability of people in the Tongan society by increasing their capacity and their capability to access Basic Human Needs within their own communities,” added Ambassador Hamuro.

    These projects are funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan. The total amount of USD$445,289 (TOP$804,211.10) were provided for the following 5 projects; Upgrading of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Facilities for ‘Apifo’ou College and Tupou College in Tongatapu; Upgrading of Longomapu Government Primary School in Vava’u; Improvement of Sea Transportation Infrastructure for ‘Eueiki Island, and Upgrading of Multipurpose Training Centre of Tonga Red Cross Society in Ha’apai. (Kindly refer to the attachment for details of assistance)Each recipient organization of 5 projects sought for Japan’s assistance prioritizing the improvement of access to Basic Human Needs of their respective grassroots communities. This assistance epitomizes Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the People and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
