  • The Government of Japan has formalized its assistance to Tonga for the Project for Upgrading of Angaha Government Primary School for inclusive development. The contract was signed between H.E. Dr. Kazuchika Hamuro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga and Mr. Laungatangata Masila, the Chairperson of Angaha Government Primary School Parents and Teachers’ Association on Thursday, 19th March, 2015 at the Embassy of Japan. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. ‘Aholotu Palu, the Deputy Secretary of Finance and National Planning, and other officials from the Ministry of Education and Training.

H.E. Dr. Hamuro in his key note address said it was an honour as he concludes his term in Tonga with this observance of good will, to sign the grant contract worth a total of USD$97,472 (YOP$176,038) for the Project for Upgrading of Angaha Government Primary School through the provision of a new toilet block; classroom building and water tanks.

“Since Japan and Tonga share the similarity of being island nation in the Pacific Ocean without major natural resources, we believe that we share the same potentials for future development and prosperity… we made it possible with our strong determination and continuous efforts toward development, and human resources as key drivers. From our own experiences, we regard education as one of the major driving forces toward sustainable development, therefore see it as the focus area of the GGP, to develop human resources by equipping young generations with essential knowledge and skills for the bright future of this beautiful island nation,” said H. E. Dr. Hamuro.

This project is funded through the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan. To date, a total of 6 GGP Projects have been approved for Tonga this year at a total cost of USD$542,761 (TOP$980,249.10). The projects have been approved based on the requests from each recipient organization for Japan’s assistance prioritizing the improvement of access to Basic Human Needs of their respective grassroots communities. This assistance epitomizes Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the People and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
