  • Japan GGP official commissioning of the Water Supply System for Fua’amotu Village
  • On June 3rd 2015, the Government of Japan and the people of Fua’amotu Village celebrated the official commissioning of an upgraded water supply system for the village, funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, GGP. Hon. Salote Maumautaimi Tuku’aho was the guest of honor of the commissioning ceremony. H.E Mr. Yukio Numata Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga also attended the official commissioning on behalf of the people and the Government of Japan.

  • His Excellency Numata in his keynote address congratulated the completion of the project and highlighted that, “In recognition of water related human insecurities, Japan through GGP assisted Fua’amotu village with necessary restorations to the water system due to the severity of its deterioration.”

  • Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, GGP was introduced in 1989, in response to the distinct nature of development needs in isolated and developing countries. To date, a total of 261 GGP projects supporting education, medical and health sector, non-profit organizations, local community and many others were implemented for the Kingdom of Tonga.

  • Mr. Vili Lui, Town Officer of Fua’amotu acknowledged the generous assistance from the people and Government of Japan. “This contribution, donation and support from the Government of Japan to our water supply system have been very much appreciated by Prince Tungi and his people. We are very much appreciated and could not explain how happy and excited we are towards this assistance,” said Mr. Lui. The Fua’amotu Village Water Committee sought for Japan’s assistance in 2012. The handover ceremony marked completion of an upgrade work to a deteriorating water supply installed since 1986.

  • This assistance epitomizes Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the People and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
