Japan Provides Assistance for Four Grassroots Human Security Projects in Tonga

- The Grant Contracts formalizing the Government of Japan providing assistance for four Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Kingdom of Togna were signed between H.E. Mr. Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tonga and Representatives of the respective recipient organizations on Thursday, 17 December 2015. Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke, Minister for Finance and National Planning attended the signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning Office in Nuku’alofa.
H.E. Mr. Yukio Numata, in his key note address, emphasized that the Government of Japan in recognising the socio-economic constraints that causes much vulnerability to the people in Tonga, promotes the significance of international cooperation and the re-alignment of our security focus to people’s every day needs.
“The initiations that we are witnessing today are part of your devoted efforts to guarantee our children’s rights to access safe water sources, education, and human security,” stated the Ambassador.
- “With our combined efforts and determination, nothing is impossible.” recalling outstanding performance of Japan’s Brave Blossoms and the scene of Japanese and Tongan rugby players joining up in a scrum during this year’s Rugby World Cup. “Together we can make a difference, tackle our future challenges to achieve common goal of future prosperity,” said the Ambassador.
The assistance was made available through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, or GGP. The total amount of US$317,878 ( TOP$649,797.00) were provided for four projects: Upgrading of Multipurpose Training Centre for Lofanga Island Community, in Ha’apai Group; Upgrading of Upper Room Primary School, in Ha’ateiho; Upgrading of Water Supply System for Puke Village, and the Upgrading of Water Supply System for Nukuleka Village. Hon. ‘Aisake Valu Eke, Minister for Finance and National Planning acknowledged the continuous assistance from the people and Government of Japan in lifting the standard of living and eradicating poverty in the Kingdom.
Mr. Sitiveni Fe’ao, Town Office of Nukuleka in the words of thanks conveyed their heartfelt and sincere appreciation for the financial assistance from Japan, and said “I urge our people altogether to work hand in hand in collaboration with their community leaders and all the stakeholders involved to ensure that these projects meet their objectives and achieve a success” .
The assistance epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and also hope to strengthen the warm and close relations between the people and Governments of Japan and the Kingdom of Tonga.
