Japan formalize Assistance to four Grassroots Human Security Projects in Tonga

Signing of 4 Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects on December 8th, 2016

The Grant Contract formalizing the Government of Japan assistance for four Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Kingdom of Tonga were signed between H.E Mr. Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Tonga, and representatives of respective recipient committees on Thursday, 8 December 2016 at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

Present at the ceremony in supporting their constituencies were Hon. Penisimani Fifita, Minister for Internal Affairs, Hon. Semisi Fakahau, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries and Hon. Semisi Sika, Minister for Infrastructure and Tourism, along with Mrs. Natalia Palu Latu, Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Rev. Feke Mafi and representatives from benefiting communities.

H.E Mr. Yukio Numata in his key note address reiterated that Japan’s Grassroots Human Security Projects, commonly known as GGP, strives to reduce the socio-economic constraints that causes much vulnerability for people in Tonga. “We are happy to take another step towards reducing Human insecurities caused by the lack of water or the lack of educational facilities because we completely understand that water and education are critical for sustainable socio-economic development,” stated the Ambassador.

Communities and Schools in Tonga benefited from Japan’s GGP projects since 1990 with Tonga’s Ministry of Finance and National Planning as the implementing agent. The grant contract formalized today reassured upgrade into the village water supply system for Ha’asini and Hamula village, Folaha village, Tatakamotonga Village, and construction of a new classroom building for the Government Primary School of Havelu/Tofoa. The vote of thanks partially in Japanese language by Mr. Siaosi Schaaf from Ha’asini and Hamula village, expressed the community and committee’s gratitude for the Government of Japan’s kindness and assistance.

The assistance epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and continue to enrich the existing warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga.
