The Government of Japan and the Lavengatonga Village Water Committee celebrated the completion of their Upgraded Water Supply System funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects, known as the GGP, on Tuesday, 28 May 2019. His Excellency Mr. Tetsuya Ishii, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan handed over the new facility during the handover ceremony at Lavengatonga. Present at the ceremony were Rev. Sailasa Mana Puamau, Mr. Sione Taumoha’apai, District Officer for Tatakamotonga District, Town Officers, Chairperson and Members of the Lavengatonga Water Committee, Representative from the Ministry of Finance and the community of Lavengatonga.

Ambassador Ishii was pleased with the successful completion of the project so that people of Lavengatonga will no longer suffer from water shortage and regular malfunctions of their old water supply system. He told the people of Lavengatonga that Japan’s GGP recognizes that a clean and stable supply of water as a life line was vital for their everyday life, hence Japan highly prioritizes water supply projects in her list of development priorities.

Mr. Viliami Tautalanoa, Town Officer of Lavengatonga thanked the Ambassador for Japan’s assistance where the people of Lavengatonga will now enjoy a more sustainable supply of water. The Village Water Committee for Lavengatonga sought for Japan’s assistance after experiencing a deteriorating water pump system installed in 1996.  The assistance from Japan was formalized with a grant amount of USD$87,862 which funded the installation of a new water pump system, a new water tank, a new tank stand, renewal of the main pipes, and a new pump house.

The Government of Japan introduced the GGP scheme in 1990 to respond directly to the basic human needs at the grass-roots level, and so far over 280 projects have been implemented in the Kingdom. The assistance also epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and the Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and continue to enrich the existing warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga.
